Teaching approach of the school |
Lower Secondary is all about gaining intellectual curiosity and developing a love of learning. The words “examination” and “assessment objectives” do not come into play until Year 10. The majority of our lessons are inquiry based, with philosophical learning questions. We conduct our formative assessments to gain an understanding of where our students are at and to address any misconceptions in their learning. The end of unit piece is always project-based that requires collaboration and teamwork within the community. At Upper Secondary, we start our two year IGCSE courses. These are far more rigorous and summative assessments, that are aligned with the IGCSE examinations, are more frequently used. A large onus is placed on the student to take responsibility for their own learning; we open the doors for students, but they are the ones that have to want to walk through them. Similarly, our provision of AS and A Levels in Year 12 and 13 respectively, is also a two year course, which allows students to delve deeper into the subjects that they enjoy the most. Students are expected to become experts in their field and there is a lot of independent study and a lot of flipped teaching during these years. Alternatively, if students are unable to access the needs of these exam-based curricula, we offer vocational BTEC courses, which are based on coursework and do not require a final examination. |
