Use of technology in the classroom

All classrooms are equipped with Interactive Whiteboards and in Primary there are also a number of class iPads to support teaching and learning. In Secondary, students bring their own devices according to the BYOD policy.

In addition, in Primary we also have shared iPad and laptop trollies which allow for one-to-one use in lessons. Across the school, we also have the latest technology such as programmable robots, 3D printers and ClassVR to provide an enriching learning experience. We are a progressive school and enjoy researching and developing the use of Educational Technology (EdTech). We host EdTech events in conjunction with local companies to showcase the latest trends.

Is the school ready to use virtual classrooms when needed? (e.g. teaching lessons online if the school is closed, e.g. during COVID-19 closures)

During the pandemic, we received the highest achievable rating when our online provision was inspected by KHDA. Lessons were conducted through live group sessions using Microsoft Teams in conjunction with lessons which were created and managed using an online platform such as Seesaw. Our current readiness means that our school community is able to quickly and easily switch to Distance Learning should the need arise.

Since the pandemic, we still use virtual technologies to host our Parent Teacher Meetings which has been seen as a welcome shift by parents.

We have a dedicated Inclusion team that works on a graduated response to identify and remove barriers to learning, ensuring that each student has the opportunity to reach their full potential and beyond. Provision includes:

Universal – All students will benefit from high-quality teaching and learning that is differentiated with on-going and timely assessments which inform any further provision need

Targeted Support – some students may benefit from small-group intervention

Specialist Support outside the school’s provision - specific targeted intervention for individuals with additional costs for specialist support met by the parent

We work in partnership with Early Intervention Centres to develop systems to ensure the effective transition of young children who experience SEND into formal mainstream education settings.

We use the information gained from assessment upon entry and identification procedures to determine the type and level of support appropriate for each student, based upon their level of development and experience of SEND. We develop personalised individual education plans (IEPs) for students identified as experiencing SEND.

We make sure that students who experience SEND are actively supported to participate in the process of learning as they develop their potential, and build relationships with their peers, through social interactions in age-appropriate common learning environments.

The school supports gifted, able and talented students

Where students are identified as gifted or talented across multiple domains they will be placed on a G&T register and a personalised response to their needs and provision will be drawn up via the Head of Year and Director of Inclusion, who will also ensure the Student can maximise their gifts and talents whilst also managing demands and emotions.

For our younger students, we do not formally identify high-ability learners, or gifted and talented until year 3. However, where we see potential in our younger students we will nurture and develop those gifts and talents under our ‘High Flyers’ umbrella.

DBSJP students have access to a broad range of activities from sports to academic interests and a variety of clubs and community initiatives.

Sports activities included

Primary students have one PE lesson and one swimming lesson per week. Secondary students focus on a different sport per term during their PE lessons. We offer Swimming, Football, Netball and Basketball that are run all through the school with competitive and recreational opportunities.
