¬ At DSHK we believe in empowering our students to be self-directed in all aspects of their lives. We support them with their learning during school and recognize that some will continue their learning—reading, project development, personal writing, ongoing research, etc.— alongside their family members when they leave the school. We support students who continue their learning beyond the school walls but always encourage each child to keep in mind the need for play, family, friends, and the development of hobbies. At Dalton, we view “homework” as something students engage in to deepen personal understanding or to stretch themselves as learners. Authentic, purposeful, student-driven learning opportunities are part of a child’s day and we encourage the same focus when they are beyond the school walls. |

Qualities and characteristics best defining the school |
Dalton School Hong Kong is a child-centered, dual-language community of global-minded learners and thinkers. Everyone in its community - its students, staff, families, alumni and Board - will live Dalton's motto and take the lead in its pursuit of life-long learning: “I am not led, I lead.” “I’m not led, I lead” provide any anecdotes from your teaching experience where this takes place. One example, at DSHK, our students determined our current theme of study because they are interested in helicopters and other forms of transportation. As a result, teachers facilitated learning experiences that address the content standards while making connections to the transportation theme. |
Teaching approach of the school |
The Dalton Plan is not a curriculum, it is a scheme of educational reorganization which reconciles the twin activities of teaching and learning. When intelligently applied it creates conditions which enable the teacher to teach and the learner to learn. DSHK is a child-centered school. Therefore, we do not use 1 specific curriculum as we seek to understand the whole
