Qualities and characteristics best defining the school |
STEAM is embedded at the school as a way of 'being', not an act of simply 'doing'. It is based on best practices related to both project and problem based learning, and focuses on concept and inquiry based learning. It is community based and provides opportunities for student agency. It promotes the individual as a learner in all aspects of life including social, emotional and intellectual. STEAM is focused on the process and skills of learning and what it means to be a learner in the real world. Through using the scientific, the engineering, and the creative process students not only successfully learn fundamental skills, in literacy, numeracy and knowledge of the world, they also explore bigger question thinking and address real world issues. These often connect with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, financial literacy, sustainability and what it means to be a global and a digital citizen. STEAM works to support students becoming successful, happy, caring, responsible, resilient, independent, empowered, and well-prepared members in our society. |
Teaching approach of the school |
High quality teaching at our STEAM campus is based on the principles of meaningful, individualised active learning. Teachers take on different roles in the classrooms to match the students' learning styles and goals, and scaffold their personal learning journey. Explicit skills teaching happens in all subjects, which is then followed up by a period of application as students explore them through carefully crafted projects in our purpose designed learning rooms, for example, in our IT Hub, DT Urban Kitchen, Life Lab Science Centre, Art Studio and Construction Room. Teaching is designed to engage and empower students, to give them a voice and choice as they learn about themselves, others and the world around them. Students are active and responsive learners, and we enjoy celebrating their successes as they navigate their learning journey with us. |
