Empowering children to think in English
Many of our teachers are recruited internationally from across the English-speaking world. Our team is enhanced by local bilingual teachers who are able to empathise with the challenge of learning English. Our curriculum is designed to develop higher-order thinking skills. With 70% of the day taught in English, we empower children to think in English by making connections, applying their knowledge and solving problems.
Developing 21st Century skills
To ensure our children are prepared for college and are able to successfully participate in the world of tomorrow, we teach 21st Century skills. Beyond technology, these are the skills needed to participate in the global economy of the future. From Early Years to High School we develop the personal goals of adaptability, cooperation, communication, enquiry, morality, resilience, respect, and thoughtfulness. Development of such skills continues in Secondary School with the IB Learner Profile attributes fostering students to be inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced, and reflective. We consider these to be essential skills for the 21st Century.

In our Early Years setting, children learn in English for 80% of the day. Teaching and learning follows the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC). Especially designed by Fieldwork Education to meet the needs of our youngest learners (3-5 year olds), the IEYC uses international best practices, holistic enquiry and play-based approaches that cover all curriculum areas including personal goals.
Children learn through creative, thematic units that relate to their lives and capture their natural curiosity. Learning is active, engaging and fun. Children are supported to learn and develop knowledge and skills at their own unique pace. They are provided with opportunities to explore and express their ideas in multiple ways including play.
In the Primary School, children learn in English for 70% of the day. Learning in English follows the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) and Cambridge Primary English and Mathematics.
IPC – With the IPC children learn about the world through thematic units that are creative, challenging and fun, designed to appeal to children’s burgeoning interests. Each unit has specific subject goals for all primary subjects including science, history, geography, music, physical education, art and technology, personal goals, and uniquely, international goals.
In the Secondary School, children learn in English for 70% of the day. Teaching and learning follows the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC), Cambridge International IGCSE and IB Diploma Programme.
In Grades 9 and 10, students follow the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education programme. In each subject, this is a two-year course which culminates in a final assessment. Cambridge IGCSE is the leading international qualification for 14 to 16 year olds and is recognised by universities and employers worldwide.
Winpenny is an IB World School and has been authorised by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB) to offer the Diploma Programme (DP) for Grades 11 and 12. The Diploma Programme is recognised worldwide for its holistic approach and students’ preparedness for higher education and the world at large.
