Use of technology in the classroom

SABIS® Costa Verde students have meaningful experiences with modern, up-to-date methods and technologies used to improve and enrich their day-to-day learning experience, enhance their academic performance, and challenge the boundaries of traditional learning environments.
Technology tools currently used by our students and teachers include E-books, interactive boards, and accompanying lessons, an integrated learning system, as well as an integrated testing and learning system.
Beyond the classroom, our students continue to benefit from technologies developed by SABIS® that allow them access to a wealth of online learning tools from their homes, which complement and reinforce what they have learned in class.

Is the school ready to use virtual classrooms when needed? (e.g. teaching lessons online if the school is closed, e.g. during COVID-19 closures)

E-learning in SABIS® Costa Verde is available for all students from the youngest preschoolers to the graduating seniors should the need arise. Every morning, they log in to the SABIS® Digital Platform from their tablets or computers at home to check their daily and weekly plans, and detailed schedules, and download any assigned material.
As part of their day learning online, students are able to attend a mix of classes, some that have either been pre-recorded by their teachers and uploaded onto the SABIS® Digital Platform, and some that are given in a “virtual classroom” environment in real-time. Virtual classes are also recorded and uploaded onto the SABIS® Digital Platform, which students can access to watch again should they need to.

External examinations or assessments available

All SABIS® Costa Verde students will study towards both the Panamanian diploma and internationally recognized standardized exams such as Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE), the SAT, Advanced Placement® (AP®) exams, and more. This means all SABIS® Costa Verde graduates will be able to choose to attend universities in Panama or anywhere in the world.

Do teachers assign homework to their students?

Homework is an essential part of the curriculum offered at SABIS® Costa Verde that starts from Term 3 in Grade 4 and onwards. Homework is an opportunity for students to spend time outside of the class reviewing and reinforcing concepts taught in class. Homework is not an opportunity to learn new material; however, the extra practice that homework provides is a necessary part of the learning process.

Approximate hours of homework given

In Grade 4 and below, it is not a practice to assign homework in SABIS® Costa Verde. Nevertheless, it is recommended that parents find time to read with their children for 10 to 15 minutes each day. In Grades 5 and 6, students may be assigned a maximum of one hour of homework each day.
Students in Grades 7 to 10 should expect approximately 20 minutes of homework per assigned subject each day. In grades 11 and 12, the amount of homework per subject increases.

The school supports gifted, able and talented students

At SABIS® Costa Verde, we understand that education is the key to the future and our teaching philosophy is aimed at delivering a top-quality education that allows all students, not only the gifted few, to use their education as a means to shape the future. As a result, we don’t label or categorize our students as gifted, able, and/or talented.
However, we offer all our students many opportunities to push themselves and their academic capabilities to reach their full potential. These opportunities include becoming a Peer Tutor or Shadow Teacher, a Subject Prefect, working with the Academic Department of the SABIS® Student Life Organization to organize academic events and initiatives, choosing to opt out of a course, practicing independent learning using SABIS® PAL (Personalized Adaptive Learning), among others.

Entry evaluation for students

Yes

Brief description of entry evaluation required

There are no academic requirements for acceptance into Kindergarten (3 to 5 years of age). Prospective students at these levels are interviewed; they must be toilet-trained and able to speak and follow simple instructions in either English or Spanish.

All other older prospective students take diagnostic assessments in the core subjects of English, Spanish and mathematics. These assessments help to determine if the student has attained the minimum expected standard for each subject.
