The DSS is the largest German cultural hub in Shanghai. However, it sees itself as a place for German expats to meet and befriend people from China and all the other nations that make up our school’s diverse community. Although our main focus is on German language and culture, we place great emphasis on teaching our students multiple languages so that they are as well-equipped as possible to study and work all over the world. The DSS offers five languages in total – Chinese, German, English, French and Latin. Abitur examinations can be taken in German, English, French or Chinese. The school also offers preparatory classes for the internationally recognized Cambridge English Qualifications for non-native speakers of English. With the foreign languages offered at DSS and the option of English-language geography classes and bilingual history classes, up to 42% of lessons in the Gymnasium programme leading up to the Abitur can be in a language other than German.

About the school

Qualities and characteristics best defining the school

The German School Shanghai (DSS) is one of the largest overseas German schools in the world and has been awarded “Excellent German School Abroad” status by the German education authorities. The DSS delivers educational excellence for over 1,100 children and young people at its two locations. For children from kindergarten to secondary school, parents and school staff alike, the DSS is more than “just” an excellent school – it is a cultural hub where togetherness comes first.

Teaching approach of the school

At both the kindergarten and the all-day school, our highly-qualified staff follow German education and teaching curricula, providing German-language instruction and helping students to perform to the best of their ability in the official German exams. Seamless transitions from kindergarten to primary school and primary to secondary school ensure a joined-up education path. Kindergarten groups engage in joint activities with Year 1 primary pupils, while Year 4 primary pupils attend taster classes to prepare them for their first year at secondary school. Meanwhile, a curriculum based on the German equivalents ensures a smooth transition to the local schooling system for students who return to Germany. During their schooling, our children and young people receive the best possible preparation for studying at international higher education institutions and for living and working around the world.

Small class sizes facilitate personal contact and create a learning and working environment that kindles the joy of learning and of pursuing excellence. We treat every child as an individual, providing a broad programme that both nurtures and challenges them.
