Boarding facilities at the school |
Boarding at VIS gives students from around the world the chance to live and learn in Verbier in a modern, friendly environment. VIS has a small, recently-built boarding house in Verbier’s historic centre. It provides up-to-date, en suite accommodation for pupils from Year 7 to Year 11. Pupils have private use of kitchen and dining facilities as well as a common room for games and socialising. There are separate, secure wings for male and female pupils and the pupils have 24/7 support from the houseparents and boarding staff, who have their own accomodation in the building. VIS is a small, friendly school and this close-knit atmosphere continues into the boarding house. The Houseparents work closely as a team to make sure all our boarders are healthy, happy and safe, learning how to be strong, independent and confident young people who care for themselves and the environment around them. Boarders are expected to participate in the daily life of the boarding house, helping out with simple chores and eating together as a community in the evening. There are always activities on offer at the weekend, from skiing and other winter sports in season to mountain biking, golf, tennis, sailing, surfing and hiking in summer. We have regular excursions to cities in Switzerland, Italy and France for culture and shopping, as well as day trips to local attractions, music festivals and nature reserves. Weekend activities are often suggested and organised by the boarders, and we do our best to support and realise their plans. All students at VIS are encouraged to take part in activities as part of the VIS curriculum, and we try to find something for everyone. We make sure there are also opportunities to relax and study so every student is rested and ready for the week ahead. |
Qualities and characteristics best defining the school |
Verbier International School (VIS) is a co-education day and boarding school located in the alpine village of Verbier, Switzerland. Founded in 2011, VIS has grown progressively since without losing its family ethos and focus on outdoor education, currently welcoming up to 200 students aged 2 to 18. The school is rooted in the concept of holistic yet individualised learning where the classroom is only one space for learning, just as mountains, forests and sports fields are. Primary students follow the English National curriculum combined with an intensive French language programme. VIS is an accredited Cambridge International and IB World School, offering the IGCSE and IB Diploma qualifications for secondary students, grounding them in a thorough preparation for success in exams, while also encouraging students to strive for excellence beyond the classroom. |
Teaching approach of the school |
VIS partners innovation with evidence-driven teaching techniques to maximise the impact on the learning of individual students. We are rooted in the concept of holistic yet individualised learning. The classroom is only one space for learning, just as mountains, forests and sports fields are. Success in public examinations is a significant but not overwhelming focus of our academic curriculum which extends from bilingual opportunities for our youngest students, Forest School experiences and a commitment to a stimulating After School Activity programme. Teachers and students are encouraged to take risks in the classroom and to be as creative as possible in pedagogy and learning. |
