The Grange Institution (TGI) is proud to be the founding member of The Alliance for Sustainable Schools (TASS), a non-profit association of international schools. This coalition, which comprises member schools in Malaysia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Hong Kong, and China, has made a commitment to expedite the shift towards a sustainable future. The Grange is the first school in Singapore among the 16 founding members, and the first school within this alliance to appoint primary aged students as ambassadors.
Founding Director, Mr. Ronald Stones OBE quoted, “As educationalists, one of the greatest contributions we can make to repairing and sustaining the life of our planet, our society and our economy is by inspiring and guiding our students in recognising the importance of doing so, and then supporting them to become the change-makers.”
He added, “Our school’s membership of The Alliance will enable the sharing of ideas to make this happen. We are delighted to be part of this important movement.”.
Since 2020, The Grange has promoted education for sustainable development through its two-time award-winning Green Granger initiative. The initiative that began as a small idea — incorporating an eco-garden around our many outdoor spaces — soon grew into a much bigger endeavor. The eco-garden eventually transformed into a miniature food forest with over 100 different types of fruits, plants, and vegetables. TGI won the Gold Award for Best Environmental Initiative at the HoneyKids Asia's Singapore Educational Awards for two years in a row, in 2021 and 2022.
The Green Granger made its next step forward in 2023 when the gradual conversion of its 1.5-acre field into a nature-inspired outdoor classroom begun. The first phase's construction started in January and is anticipated to be completed in the second quarter of 2023.
As a TASS member, The Grange is further committing to the Sustainable Schools Charter, promising to promote sustainability by establishing procedures at the school that will help students gain the essential competences needed to be stewards of sustainability. This dedication includes assessing the school's institutional operations, constructed environment, and policies in light of sustainable principles.
